Paul Jorgensen joins Smart & Biggar

Smart & Biggar is pleased to announce that Paul Jorgensen has joined the firm's Toronto office as an associate.

November 4, 2015

Paul Jorgensen’s practice focusses on litigating and prosecuting patents, particularly in the area of pharmaceuticals and the life sciences. He works with pharmaceutical companies and has experience preparing for trials, motions and Patented Medicines (Notice of Compliance) applications, as well as in working with expert witnesses.

Paul’s in-depth understanding of biology and chemistry combined with his rigorous legal training allows him to provide clients with the advice and representation necessary to succeed in litigating and prosecuting patents in the pharmaceutical and life science spheres. He has technical experience in biochemistry, molecular biology, genetics, immunology, metabolism, genomics, proteomics, cancer, medicine and pharmaceuticals.

After obtaining his Ph.D. in molecular genetics from the University of Toronto, Paul worked for four years as a post-doctoral fellow in the Department of Systems Biology at Harvard Medical School, where he studied cancer biology. During this time, Paul was a Fellow of the Jane Coffin Childs Memorial Fund, a prestigious fellowship in cancer research. He also spent a year working as a judicial clerk (2014-2015) at the Court of Appeal for Ontario, where he clerked with Justices Robert J. Sharpe, Gloria J. Epstein, and Mary Lou Benotto, and gained experience in appellate litigation.

During his legal studies, Paul was the recipient of the Harley D. Hallett Renewable Entrance Scholarship and the Weirfoulds LLP Prize in Administrative Law.
